Leeward Islands Upset Defending Champions Barbados In T20 Blaze Opener

March 21, 2024

The Leeward Islands provided an opening round upset when they defeated defending champions Barbados in match 1 of the T20 Blaze at Warner Park in St. Kitts. This is their first ever win in the T20 Blaze.

Scorecards here

Batting first, the Leeward posted a defendable total of 139/7 from their 20 overs thanks a fiery 67 off 52 deliveries from Reniece Boyce. Boyce struck six fours and four sixes as the rest of the batter failed to follow her blistering knock. Barbados youngster NaiJanni Cumberbatch mowed through the Leewards batter, finishing with 4/9 from her four overs.

In their reply, a half-century from Kyshona Knight along with 37 from her twin and skipper Kycia and 23 from Aaliyah Alleyne were not enough to take Barbados to a win. Three ducks from Zaliya Campbell, Trishan Holder and NaiJanni Cumberbatch hindererd their team chase the target. 2/18 from Rozel Liburd and economical bowling from the Leewards bowlers restricted Barbados to 127/5 in their 20 overs.

Trinidad and Tobago Red Force Divas carried over into the T20 Blaze their abysmal performance in the CG United Women’s Super50 Cup. They were bowled out for 66 in 18.3 overs by Guyana. Shunelle Sawh 15 and 14 from Steffie Soogrim were the top scorers for the Red Force Divas as Plaffiana Millington spun a web over the batters. Millington finished with figures of 4/5 in 3.3 overs. Guyana took 11 overs to reach their 67-run target to finish on 67/3. Shabika Gajnabi top-scored with 24 not out and captain Shemaine Campbelle made 19. Briana Harricharan had the best bowling figures for Red Force Divas of 1/6.

Newly crowned CG United Women’s Super50 Cup champions Jamaica opened their T20 Blaze campaign with a 7-wicket victory over the Windward Islands.

Qiana Joseph led the batting for the Windwards with 56 off 55 deliveries and 37 from the in-form Jannillea Glasgow as the Windwards posted 117/5 in their 20 overs. Bowling for Jamaica, Chedean Nation had the best figures of 3/19. Dropped catches and poor fielding costed the Windwards a fight to defend the low total. Rashada Williams 52 took the game away from the Windwards, along with 19 from Natasha McLean. Zaida James picked up 2/16 and Afy Fletcher 1/21.
