January 29, 2024

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) proudly salutes the West Indies Men’s team on their historic victory over Australia by eight (8) runs in the second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, Australia, on Sunday, January 28, 2024, the first West Indies Test win in Australia in 27 years.

A young West Indies squad with seven (7) uncapped players at the start of the series put on a stellar performance in the second Test, with Kavem Hodge and Joshua da Silva putting on a 149-run 6th wicket stand, Kevin Sinclair scoring 50 batting at number 8 on debut, a hard-fought 41 from Kirk McKenzie to top-score in West Indies’ second innings, and an exceptional bowling effort by Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph and the new sensation, Shamar Joseph, who took 7/68 to stun Australia and secure victory for West Indies.

“This young West Indies Men’s Test team have performed exceptionally well throughout the series against a world-leading opponent. We commend captain Brathwaite and his men for all their efforts, and whole-heartedly congratulate debutant Shamar Joseph on his remarkable feat with the ball, despite an injured toe, to take seven (7) wickets in a courageous match-winning effort in the second Test”, commented WIPA President and CEO, Wavell Hinds, “We wish the team continued success for the future.”
