September 28, 2023

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) extends congratulations to Cricket West Indies (CWI) Vice President Azim Bassarath and former West Indies cricketer Samuel Badree on receiving the Hummingbird Medal (HBM) Gold Award at the 2023 National Awards of Trinidad and Tobago.

Azim Bassarath currently serves as President of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) and became Vice President of CWI in March 2023, the first administrator from Trinidad and Tobago to do so.

Samuel Badree is a cricket commentator, level three coach, mentor to West Indies spinners, and former WIPA secretary. He recently founded and operates the Badree’s Academy of Sports Education (BASE) for children in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Hummingbird Medal Gold Award is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s highest honors, recognizing exceptional contributions and achievements in various fields. It may be awarded in Gold, Silver or Bronze based on the assessed level of the service rendered. Bassarath and Badree received the HBM Gold Award on Sunday, September 24, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, for their many years of exemplary service to the sport of cricket in Trinidad and Tobago.

WIPA President and CEO, Wavell Hinds, remarked, “On behalf of the executive, management and membership of WIPA, congratulations to Messers Bassarath and Badree on this significant recognition. Your contribution to cricket over the years is a noteworthy and commendable one, deserving of recognition. We wish you both continued success in your future endeavors.”
