Sammy relishing WC challenge

February 9, 2015

Experienced all-rounder Darren Sammy said he is fully prepared as the West Indies get set for their first taste of action ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup, which bowls off on Saturday.
The Windies went into action against England in their first official warm-up match (last night) today at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The 31-year-old Sammy, who was the Windies captain at the 2011 World Cup, said the team is in good spirits and looking forward to the tournament. The two-time World Cup champions will play in Pool B alongside Ireland, UAE, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan and South Africa.

The West Indies had a full training session yesterday at the Blacktown High Performance Centre. And Sammy said if the Windies produce their best cricket they will prove a tough proposition. “That’s what we are. We come and when we play cricket the way we could, nobody else could match, nobody,” said Sammy.

He said the inexperienced skipper Jason Holder can expect to get support from the senior members and he would use his experience, as an inexperienced captain at the last World Cup, to assist Holder.

“I will definitely pass it on to him. He is one who is always welcome for advice and I always say, as a captian you must always trust your gut, but also have the ability to make the team feel and be part of the set up,” Sammy added.

WIPA has definitely made a tremendous impact when it comes to women’s cricket, they have made us more visible in the cricketing circles and I must applaud them for putting us on the map where West Indies cricket is concerned.
