June 14, 2024

West Indies move up to No.3 in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings after resounding win against New Zealand guarantees qualification.

With West Indies beating New Zealand last night, the co-hosts became the fourth team to qualify for the next stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

A Sherfane Rutherford masterclass ensured that West Indies set an unachievable target for the Kiwi’s whose qualification hopes were severely dented after their second tournament defeat.

In the latest ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings update, West Indies have moved to third position and are behind India and Australia currently.

This victory against New Zealand ensured that co-hosts West Indies will play three more games in the tournament, with the possibility of two additional matches if they advance to the knockout stages.

Under the leadership of Rovman Powell, West Indies remain unbeaten in their three games and are now among the strong contenders to lift the trophy in Barbados on June 29th.

The Road to the Second Round

The West Indies began their campaign with a comfortable victory against Papua New Guinea, successfully chasing down a target of 137 in just 19 overs. This win was powered by an outstanding performance from Rostan Chase, who was named Player of the Match.

In their second game of the tournament, the West Indies showcased their dominance against Uganda. Batting first, they posted an imposing total of 173. Their bowlers then delivered a stellar performance, dismissing Uganda for a mere 39 runs, with Akeal Hosein leading the charge with a remarkable five-wicket haul.

With qualification for the Second Round on the line, the West Indies faced their toughest challenge yet in New Zealand. Rising to the occasion, they secured a hard-fought victory, thereby cementing their place in the next stage of the tournament.

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.
