Guyana Jaguars aiming to maintain position atop PCL

Leaders Guyana Jaguars have shrugged off the disappointment of their rained-out three-day practice game, which was expected to help them beef up preparation for the resumption of the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) this weekend.

The players were limited to a net session on the scheduled final day of the encounter on Saturday but coach Esuan Crandon said the setback had not been a major one. “It’s not a worry,” the former player told Kaieteur News.

“While we would have liked to have a practice game before we left for Jamaica, everybody in the squad was either in the NAGICO Super50 competition or as in the case with Leon (Johnson) and Narsingh (Deonarine), in South Africa with the West Indies. So they have been playing cricket this month.”

Guyana lead the PCL standings with 57 points, seven clear of Jamaica Franchise. They have won three of their four outings, losing only to Barbados Pride in a tight finish in the third round at the National Stadium in Providence.

Pride lie third in the standings on 44 points, Windward Islands Volcanoes fourth on 26 points, with Trinidad and Tobago Red Force fifth on 24 points and Leeward Islands Hurricanes bottom of the pile on ten points.

Crucially, Guyana face Jamaica in a top-of-the-table clash next weekend in Kingston, but will need to lift themselves especially following their heavy defeat in the final of the NAGICO Super50 last week. Chasing 201 for victory against Red Force at Queen’s Park Oval, they crashed to 65 all out – their lowest ever one-day score.
