KINGSTON, JAMAICA – The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) is pleased that the four-year ban imposed on Jamaican and West Indies batsman John Campbell has been reduced.
WIPA, on behalf of Mr. Campbell, filed an appeal to his four-year ban from cricket at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in December 2022; the matter was first heard in April 2023. Earlier this month, WIPA protested the length of time taken for CAS to hand down its ruling after an unprecedented 6th postponement.
On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport handed down a ruling which reduced John Campbell’s ban to 22 months, effective from October 6, 2022. The ruling found that Campbell did not deliberately try to evade sample collection by doping control officers. John will be eligible to return to competitive cricket in August 2024.
“WIPA is pleased with the delivery of a verdict and the reduction of the ban,” says WIPA President and CEO, Wavell Hinds, “We are happy for John, and we would like to express sincere gratitude to all those who assisted with getting us a resolution on the matter. Nevertheless, we are very dissatisfied with the numerous postponements, the prolonged wait for a verdict to be handed down by CAS, and the inefficiencies in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) process, and we welcome the resolution of such injustices in the very near future,” said Hinds.
