The West Indies began their ICC Men’s World T20 title defence with a six-wicket loss to England in a rematch of the 2016 World Cup final. After being asked to bat first, the defending champions were bowled out for 55. With the ball, West Indies clinched four English wickets as left-arm spinner Akeal Hosen stood tall on his first World Cup appearance with figures of 4-0-24-2.

The first of two highlight moments in the field for West Indies was Hosein’s brilliant diving return catch to dismiss Liam Livingstone (1) . Secondly  Chris Gayle created another record in his illustrious Twenty20 career securing 100 T20 catches when he caught Jason Roy (11) from the bowling of 2012 World Cup winner Ravi Rampaul took a wicket in his first Twenty20 International appearance for West Indies since November 2015 versus Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on the result and Hosein efforts ahead of second Group A fixture on Tuesday against South Africa captain Kieron Pollard said:

“It was unacceptable, we accept that. These sorts of games sometimes, we just need to bin it. For us, it’s just a matter of finding our straps. We haven’t batted well in our three games so far. We went out, guys tried to play their shots, and it didn’t come off.

Pollard continued:

“I don’t think any sort of panic will come into our camp. It is what it is, we just need to take it on our chest and move on, this is international sport. Obviously, we play a lot of cricket around the world, and this is not the first time something like this has happened. We’ve played cricket around the world, and we have the experience of games like this.  “He (Hosein) got an opportunity because of the injury to Fabian Allen. Everything happens for a reason, and Akeal Hosein showed us what he can do.”

The West Indies will have their second match against South Africa on Tuesday at the same venue. First ball is 2pm (6am Eastern Caribbean/5am Jamaica).
