Volcanoes, Pride win – 4th day, 7th round

December 18, 2017

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Windward Islands Volcanoes and Barbados Pride logged comfortable wins to ensure all three matches in the Digicel 4-Day Championship ended with outright results and they got a timely boost ahead of the long break for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday.

Windies “A” Team all-rounder Kyle Mayers completed a memorable spell to bowl Volcanoes to a 119-run victory over Jamaica Scorpions on the final day of their seventh-round match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, to post their first win of the season.

And, the spin bowling trio of Jomel Warrican, Hayden Walsh, Jr and Kenroy Williams swept Pride to a 207-run victory over Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at the Brian Lara Cricket Ground.

Volcanoes (226-9 dec & 283) beat Scorpions (112-9 dec & 279) by 119 runs in Gros-Islet, St. Lucia

Mayers collected two of the last three Scorpions wickets to end with 5-92 from 23 overs, as the Volcanoes needed just over an hour to complete victory.

Fabien Allen hit 42 and Odean Smith made 41, sharing 54 for the ninth wicket to frustrate the Volcanoes, but once the pair were separated, the last two wickets fell in successive overs.

Veteran Volcanoes left-hander Devon Smith was named Player-of-the-Match for his hundreds in each innings which have carried his aggregate to a season-leading 873.

Pride (316 & 221-7 dec) beat Red Force (214 & 116) by 207 runs in Tarouba, Trinidad

Test left-arm spinner Warrican was the most impactful, grabbing 3-13 from 12 overs to finish with match figures of 9-84 to earn the Player-of-the-Match award, as the Red Force, chasing 324 for victory, were bowled out just before tea.

Leg-spinner Walsh took 3-41 from 14 overs, and Williams bagged 3-46 from 21.5 overs and had the privilege of formalising the result when he had Bryan Charles caught at slip for 13.

Red Force captain Denesh Ramdin made 24 and was the only batsman on his to pass 20.

Earlier, Pride added 33 to their overnight total at a little under a run-a-ball before they declared their second innings.

Neither overnight batsman was dismissed – West Indies 2016 Under-19 World Cup-winning all-rounder Shamar Springer finished with the top score of an unbeaten 51 from his overnight 38 and wicketkeeper/batsman Mario Rampersaud, who resumed on eight, remained not out on 26.
