Superb Chanders century puts Lancashire on top

April 16, 2017

LONDON—Shiv Chanderpaul’s incredible powers continued to show no signs of wane as he notched his 74th first class hundred with a superb 182 against Surrey in the English County Championship yesterday.

Resuming day two at the Oval on 85, the 42-year-old hardly put a foot wrong as he marched to triple figures in an innings which propelled the visitors to 470 all out in their first innings.

At the close, Surrey in reply were 112 for two.

All told, the left-handed Chanderpaul faced 328 balls in a shade over eight hours and counted 21 fours and two sixes.

As was the case throughout his stellar 164-Test career which yielded 11 867 runs, the innings was a rescue mission for Lancashire.

When the visitors slumped to 122 for six on Friday’s opening day, Chanderpaul came to their assistance in a 172-run, seventh wicket stand with Jordan Clark who began the day unbeaten on 108.

Yesterday, the pair stretched their partnership to 243 with Clark gathering 140 off 212 deliveries with 23 fours and three sixes.

When Clark departed, Chanderpaul took on the responsibility of shepherding the tail, putting on 42 with Stephen Parry (21) for the eighth wicket and a further 63 for the 10th with Simon Kerrigan (20 not out).

He was finally last out, driving England off-spinner Gareth Batty to cover.

Left-arm seamer Mark Footitt was the best bowler with five for 118.

Discarded by West Indies selectors two years ago, Chanderpaul has continued to score heavily in first class cricket and before he left the Caribbean to take up his commitments with Lancashire, had already gathered 622 runs at an average of 62 in the Regional four-day championship.

He is the second leading scorer, only behind West Indies A batsman Kyle Hope with 649 runs. (CMC)
