Super50: McCarthy Looking To Build On Strong Start To Tournament

November 11, 2019

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Andre McCarthy made a strong start to the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup on Thursday.

The Jamaica Scorpions batsman and part-time off-spin bowler earned the Player-of-the-Match award following a memorable all-round performance against Barbados Pride at Warner Park.

McCarthy grabbed 4-41 from his allotted 10 overs and West Indies fast bowler Oshane Thomas supported with 4-52 from eight overs, as the Pride were bowled out for 265 in their allocation of 50 overs, after choosing to bat.

In reply, McCarthy completed an excellent all-round performance, when he gathered 95, as Scorpions tumbled to 190 all out in the 40th over.

McCarthy spoke to CWI Media following the game and said he hoped to build on his strong start to the tournament and inspire his side. . .

On his performance in the game:

I want to dedicate this Player-of-the-Match award to the coaching staff for just believing in me and having the confidence to go out there and show my talent.

On his preparations for the Super50 Cup:

We had a number of trial games, but I did not get enough runs. They, however, believed in me and they know what I normally do in this tournament and they backed me to go out there to do my thing.

On his success in the Super50 Cup over the years:

It’s a format that I enjoy, and I will continue to enjoy and see what can happen from here.

On how special the performance was to him:

I am disappointed that my team lost the game. I felt that I should have gotten my team over the finish line, so next time I will deal with the situation much better.

On his bowling:

I normally bowl well for the Scorpions. I just always seem to have the confidence whenever I play for Jamaica to take up ball and I do what I need to do.

On how his performance sets him up for the rest of the tournament:

Normally, when you start a tournament well, it gives you momentum that you can take throughout the tournament. It is now for me to build on it and finish the tournament strong.

On the result of the game:

It was just our players having to get over a few nerves at the start of the tournament. By the second game, I think the players will be much more ready and will express themselves.
