Richard Pybus Audio | Review 1st Test of Wisden Trophy Series

January 28, 2019

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – West Indies interim head coach, Richard Pybus, spoke to members of the media after the home side completed victory by 381 runs over England in the first Test of the Wisden Trophy Series at Kensington Oval on Saturday.

Off-spinner Roston Chase had a memorable match when he grabbed the amazing figures of 21.4-2-60-8 on the final day as the home side took a 1-0 lead in the three-match rubber. The slim, six-footer recorded the second-best bowling analysis by a West Indian against England – behind 8-45 by the legendary Curtly Ambrose – 29 years ago also at Kensington Oval.

“He (Chase) was wonderful today. I just think the pressure created by the bowling unit was great,” Pybus said of the allrounder. “You have four good quick bowlers. Roston bowled exceptionally well, his control was good …  good fields … built up a huge amount of pressure throughout the day and just his control and consistency. That will give him a huge amount of confidence going forward.”

He added: “I think as a unit they worked well and managed to put together good waves of pressure. Interestingly on the fourth day we thought it would go up and down a little more than it did. But the quick bowlers were very good and I just think that the amount of pressure that was built up – I don’t want to say Roston didn’t bowl well; he bowled exceptionally well – but when you have pressure from both ends it is pretty tough for batters.”

The Player-of the-Match award went to captain Holder who scored a majestic 202 not out from 229 balls in the second innings which helped to set England a target of 628 to win. He added a record unbeaten partnership of 295 in the second innings with wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich, who made 116 not out.

“I’m delighted. The guys played extremely well – prepared well, executed well so I’m just very happy for the boys. I think when you turn up and you deliver your game plans and you execute it really well with precision, it gives you an understanding of possibilities and what you can do down the line. They really turned up, they kept their focus, what we looked to do strategically, they did. I think that’s all credit to Jason and how he led the team,” Pybus said.

Scores: WEST INDIES 289 (Shimron Hetmyer 81, Shai Hope 57, Roston Chase 54; James Anderson 5-46, Ben Stokes 4-59) and 415-6 declared (Jason Holder 202 not out, Shane Dowrich 116 not out; Moeen Ali 3-78) ENGLAND 77 (Kemar Roach 5-17, Jason Holder 2-15, Alzarri Joseph 2-20) and 246 (Rory Burns 84; Roston Chase 8-60)

The two teams now travel to Antigua for the second Test which will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. Play starts on Thursday, January 31 and first ball daily is 10am (9am Jamaica Time).

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.
