Trinidad and Tobago Red Force skipper Yannick Ottley is looking for greater consistency from his players as they gear up for the fourth round Digicel Regional Four-Day clash against Jamaica Scorpions at Sabina Park in Kingston, starting on Thursday.
The Red Force leave for Jamaica tomorrow with the same squad that faced the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the previous rain-affected match that ended in a draw at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain last Monday.
The Red Force batsmen showed some backbone against the Leewards, reaching 287 for eight with debutant Isaiah Rajah hitting 69, Kyle Hope making 86 and Roshon Primus scoring 42 not out.
That was less than a week after the Red Force were dismissed for 168 and 99 against Barbados Pride in a 292-run defeat.
With a short break before the Jamaica clash, the Red Force players got a chance to do some individual work with the coaches but with seven games to go, Ottley is optimistic that the team can challenge for the top spot.
All the teams are still close after three rounds of matches with defending champions Guyana Jaguars at the top of the table with 33.6 points, Pride in second place on 33.4, Leewards in third on 29.4, Jamaica Scorpions fourth on 28.6 and T&T fifth on 27 points. The Windward Islands Volcanoes are sixth with 17.6 points
“Being consistent in all aspects of the game. Also sticking together as a team on and off the field. I think will go a long way in helping us to be successful this season,” Ottley said after the team trained at the National Cricket Centre in Couva, yesterday.
“Yes it has been mixed results so far. It is also unfortunate the previous game was washed out and we did not get to showcase our skills in the field but going to Sabina we are obviously looking to pick up a win,” he added.
Looking back at the previous game against the Leewards Islands Hurricanes, he said “I still think is was a bit unfortunate rain affected the last game.”
“With that game against the Leewards, we started well with the bat and it could have been two wins and one loss at home and I think that would have been a pretty good start for us but the batting has really come along well (after the Barbados game) and we just have to continue to play together as a team and make sure we keep the attitude right,” Ottley explained.
The T&T skipper is also pleased to see his players looking to improve on their performances.
“We have had a couple rest days and a few practice sessions but the guys have been doing some one-on-one work with the coaches and identifying a few areas we need to improve on so it is good to see guys working on their skills and trying to be better at what we do,” said Ottley.
“We are pretty good at the moment. The team is really gelling together. There is a lot of unity in the team. We are like a family and we just need to keep supporting each other,” he added.
