IPL franchises could be allowed to retain players

October 25, 2017

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), the two franchises returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL), after serving the two-year suspension period, can hope to cling on to some of their original star players if the proposals floated by the IPL Governing Council (GC) is agreed upon by the rest of the franchises.

The two tainted franchises have been reinstated into the 2018 edition of the tournament after having completed their two-year suspension period. Speaking to the media after the IPL GC meeting on Tuesday (October 24), an influential member of the Governing council confirmed that retention of players by the franchises could be an option ahead of the upcoming IPL auctions.

While the exact details are yet to be divulged, it is understood that franchises will be allowed to retain a maximum of three players and further retention could be made by exercising the ‘Right to Match’ option. While some franchises are enthused by the idea of retaining some of their players, a few franchises are said to be against the idea of retention.

If accepted, it could mean that MS Dhoni could be back playing for Chennai Super Kings while the Royals could get long-serving Indian middle-order batsman, Ajinkya Rahane, back to their fold.

Another major talking point of Tuesday’s GC meeting was the exact purse that each franchise should be allowed during the auctions prior to the 2018 edition of the tournament. While some franchises wanted the purse to be fixed at Rs 80 crores, some other franchises have requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to fix the maximum expenditure of each franchise at Rs 75 crore. “Most of the franchises want the salary purse to Rs 75 crore. I guess it would be done,” the member said.
