Guyana Topple Barbados In Key Battle…

August 27, 2018

…T&T, Jamaica keep things interesting in the WINDIES Under-19 One-day Championship

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Guyana defied a destructive spell from Shemar Persaud to earn a crucial, three-wicket victory over Barbados in a low-scoring contest in the WINDIES Under-19 One-day Championship today.

Half-centuries from Cephas Cooper and Navin Bidaisee in a hundred-run, opening standing led Trinidad & Tobago to a crushing, 10-wicket win over Canada, and Jamaica overcame a half-century blitz from Zawandi White to grab a seven-wicket victory over Leeward Islands in the fifth round of matches.

At Park Hill: Persaud grabbed 5-19 from 9.5 overs, as the Guyanese, chasing 81 for victory, ran into trouble, after an opening stand of 43 between Sachin Singh and Joshua Persaud.

Left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce supported with 2-29 from 10 overs, as Guyana slumped to 70 for seven in the 26th over before holding their nerve to cross the finish line with 121 balls remaining.

Earlier, no Barbados batsman reached 20 and they were dismissed for 80 in 25 overs with Joshua Jones and Kevin Sinclair taking three wickets apiece.

At Park Hill: Cooper slammed nine fours in the top score of 71 not out from 92 balls, and Bidaisee collected 10 fours and one six in 67 not out from 97 balls, as T&T successfully chased 156 to win without losing a wicket and with 112 balls remaining.

Kavian Naresh had struck three fours and one six in 50 from 57 balls to lead the Canadians to 155 all out in 37.1 overs, after they chose to bat.

Naresh shared two vitals stands with Harkaran Mann and Raqib Shamsudeen, but Jayden Seales captured 4-40 from 10 overs, and Avinash Mahabirsingh and Joshua James took three wickets apiece to undermine Canada’s batting.

At the Arnos Vale Sports Complex: White struck six fours and one six in 51 from 56 balls, but Leewards were bowled out for 108 in 39.5 overs.

The Jamaicans reached their target with 141 balls remaining thanks to steady knocks of 33 from Bryan Brown and 26 from Andre McCarthy.
