Guyana have been crowned 2025 Cricket West Indies Women’s T20 Blaze champions after a nail-biting Super Over victory against Jamaica at Arnos Vale Stadium on Sunday.
In a contest worthy of the occasion, the teams couldn’t be separated after 40 overs of cricket as both finished on 122 for 5, forcing a Super Over decider where nerves of steel from Nyia Latchman secured Guyana’s first-ever regional women’s title.
Jamaica, batting first in the final, posted a competitive 122-5 with Chedean Nation’ 35, Abigail Bryce’s 32 and Jodian Morgan’s 27 laying a solid platform despite excellent bowling from Nyia Latchman (2-11) and Ashmini Munisar (2-26).
Guyana’s response mirrored the Jamaicans as captain Shemaine Campbelle stroked a solid 54 in support of Realeanna Grimmond’s crucial 46. Drama unfolded in the final moments as Campbelle was run out with just four runs needed from two balls, setting up the Super Over showdown.
After Guyana managed just 8 runs in their Super Over, victory seemed within Jamaica’s grasp, but Latchman produced a bowling masterclass which restricted Jamaica to only 3 runs and sparked wild celebrations as Guyana claimed their maiden title.
Guyana’s triumph was built on consistency throughout the ten-day tournament, finishing top of the preliminary round with four victories from five matches.
Their campaign began with a comfortable seven-wicket win over the Leeward Islands, as off-spinner Sheneta Grimmond dismantled the opposition batting lineup before they chased down 88 with ease. A rain-affected second match against Windward Islands saw another clinical performance, with Nyia Latchman taking a remarkable 4-8 as they successfully defended a modest target.
The Guyanese continued their good form in the third round with a four-wicket victory over Barbados, before they produced the most dominant display of the tournament by skittling Trinidad & Tobago for just 35 runs – the lowest total in the competition – and chasing it down in just 6.3 overs.
Their only setback came in the final preliminary match against Jamaica, who handed them a seven-wicket defeat despite Campbelle’s defiant 32. That result gave Jamaica a crucial confidence boost ahead of the final, but Guyana would have the last laugh when it mattered most.
Defending champions Jamaica endured a turbulent route to the final. After a comfortable opening win against the Windward Islands, they suffered back-to-back losses to Trinidad & Tobago and the Leeward Islands.
Their tournament was reignited by Chinelle Henry’s spectacular 100 off just 49 balls against Barbados – the first century in the tournament’s history – as they racked up 149-5 en route to a 62-run victory.
The momentum continued with their crucial win over previously unbeaten Guyana in the final round, with Abigail Bryce’s unbeaten 30 guiding them to a seven-wicket triumph that secured their place in the final.
Windward Islands and Leeward Islands both finished with creditable 3-2 records, with the latter’s campaign highlighted by Qiana Joseph’s explosive 43 not out off just 19 balls to defeat Jamaica in a rain-affected five-over shootout.
Trinidad & Tobago, after opening with two impressive wins, faltered to the finish with a 2-3 record, while Barbados endured a forgettable campaign, losing all five matches.
The tournament showcased the growing depth of women’s cricket across the Caribbean, with several standout individual performances catching the eyes of stakeholders and fans across the region.
However, the final word belonged to Guyana, whose historic triumph was the perfect conclusion for a campaign defined by team spirit and good cricket – especially when it mattered most.
