Explosive New Zealand batsman Glenn Phillips will join Jamaica Tallawahs to participate in the ongoing season of the Caribbean Premier League. The 20-year-old batsman will become the sixth player from his country to play in CPL2017 with Kane Williamson (Barbados Tridents), Martin Guptill (Guyana Amazon Warriors), Brendon McCullum and Colin Munro (Trinbago Knight Riders), Mitchell McClenaghan and Jesse Ryder (St. Lucia Stars) the others in the competition.
Phillips, who earned himself a T20I debut against South Africa in Auckland after his chart-topping feat at the T20 Super Smash (369 runs at strike-rate of 143), had registered for the CPL draft this year but wasn’t picked up with teams majorly preferring to retain players at most price categories. His growing stature as an all-round batsman – he became the first New Zealand player to hit centuries across first class, List A and T20 formats in the same season – is reported to have attracted several suitors before Tallawahs made the early move.
Tallawahs assistant coach Mark O’Donnell, who also coaches Phillips at Auckland Aces, reckoned that his protege’s ability to double up as a back-up wicketkeeper, was an added bonus for the side. “Glenn is valuable to any team he joins as he can turn a game on its head with his batting. He is also handy behind the stumps so to have him as a keeping option is also helpful for the Tallawahs,” he said.
Phillips will join Kumar Sangakkara, Shakib Al Hasan and Pakistan pair Imad Wasim and Mohammad Sami as the Tallawahs’ foreign acquisitions. The defending champions have played two games in the season thus far, winning one and losing the other. They will play the Knight Riders in their third fixture on Wednesday (August 9).
