Cottrell, Mayers help Windies A level series

November 7, 2017

FLORENCE HALL, Jamaica, CMC – Man-of-the-Match Sheldon Cottrell conjured up a lethal spell to fire West Indies A to a series-levelling 45-run win over Sri Lanka A in the final one-dayer of the three-match series here Sunday.

Defending a paltry 152 at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium, the hosts bundled Sri Lanka A out for 107 in the 39th over, with left-arm speedster Cottrell taking four for 19 from 8.3 overs.

Opener Nipun Karunanayake top-scored with 47 but was one of just four batsmen in double figures and the only one to pass 13.

Cottrell disposed of Sandun Weerakkody (6) and Roshen Silva (3) cheaply to leave the innings tottering on 12 for two in the fifth over.

And when captain Dhananjaya De Silva was caught at the wicket off fast bowler Odean Smith for three, the visitors were slumping at 28 for three in the 11th over.

Karunanayake, who faced 113 deliveries and struck two fours, put on 25 for the fourth wicket with Charith Asalanka (10) – the highest stand of the innings – but once they were separated, the last seven wickets perished for 54 runs.

Seamer Kyle Mayers was also superb, taking three for 24 to destroy the lower order.

Earlier, Shamarh Brooks top-scored with 35 while Andre McCarthy got 27 but Windies A also faltered after opting to bat first.

They were well placed on 115 for four just after the halfway stage but declined to lose their last six wickets for 37 runs.

Windies A were undermined by left-arm pacer Vimukthi Perera who grabbed four for 25 while seamers Lahiru Kumara (2-30) and Shehan Madushanka (2-35) supported with two wickets apiece.

Perera accounted for Montcin Hodge for one and Rahkeem Cornwall for 18, to leave the hosts on 22 for two in the seventh over.

Brooks anchored two small but crucial stands, putting on 41 for the third wicket with Sunil Ambris (20) and a further 30 for the fourth wicket with McCarthy.

However, Brooks and McCarthy fell within 22 runs of each other and West Indies A then failed to recover.
