Cornwall Leads The Way As Hurricanes Dominate

February 23, 2016

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas (CMC) – Rahkeem “Jimbo” Cornwall narrowly missed out on his second first-class hundred as Leeward Islands Hurricanes put up another impressive showing on the second day of their seventh-round clash of the WICB Regional Four Day Competition against Windward Islands Volcanoes here on Saturday.

The burly Antiguan right-hander fell for a whirlwind 97, a knock that headlined a solid batting effort and lifted Hurricanes to 327 all out in their first innings at the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School Ground. At the close, Volcanoes were 21 without loss in reply.

Cornwall bludgeoned 10 boundaries off a mere 95 balls to give Hurricanes momentum late in the innings. Just last week the in-form all-rounder turned in his best bowling performance in first-class cricket by claiming match figures of 12 for 205 to set up victory over the Jamaica Scorpions in St John’s.

Resuming the day on 61 for two, Hurricanes also got 47 from Orlando Peters, 46 from wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton and 41 from captain Nkrumah Bonner.

Medium pacer Kyle Mayers picked up his maiden regional first-class five-wicket haul in only his second game, claiming five for 83, while fellow Barbadian seamer Kevin McClean took three for 56.

Fresh off their first win of the season last week, Hurricanes used key partnerships throughout the day to build their innings. Bonner and opener Montcin Hodge (31) extended their overnight third wicket stand to 61, while Peters and Hamilton put on 67 for the fifth wicket.

Cornwall then added 70 for the sixth wicket with Hamilton and a further 77 for the ninth wicket with Jeremiah Louis, who finished on 27 not out.

The 23-year-old Cornwall seemed all set for three figures when he was ninth out, edging Mayers to Devon Smith at first slip.
