Brathwaite impresses with half-century

November 4, 2014

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka (CMC) — Opener Kraigg Brathwaite continued to enhance his credentials as a one-day player with an attractive half-century, as the second one-dayer against Sri Lanka A was ruined by rain here yesterday.

Opting to bat first in the rain-affected contest at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, West Indies A were bowled out for 193 off 37 of the allotted 38 overs.

The right-handed Brathwaite, known primarily as a grafter, struck 63 from 87 balls with four fours, an innings that rescued his side from a poor start of 19 for two in the fifth over.

He put on 68 for the second wicket with left-hander Jason Carter whose 39 came from 45 balls and included two fours and two sixes.

Brathwaite batted deep into the innings before departing in the 32nd over, after becoming the last of seamer Nisala Gamage’s three wickets for 36 runs.

Captain Carlos Brathwaite provided a late innings flourish, belting four fours and two sixes in an 18-ball 39.

Seamer Farveez Maharoof (2-22), leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis (2-43) and medium pacer Dushmantha Chameera (2-48) finished with two wickets apiece.

Rain then allowed all of 13 deliveries in Sri Lanka A’s innings, before the game was ended abruptly.

The hosts were eight for one when the rains arrived.

The final game is carded for Wednesday in Colombo, with Windies A trailing 1-0 in the series after losing the first match by six runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method here Saturday.
