England vow to be ‘brutally honest’ after shock West Indies defeat

August 30, 2017

England captain Joe Root criticised his side’s efforts with the bat after West Indies clinched a stunning five-wicket victory at Headingley.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the hosts were bowled out for just 258 as only Root and Ben Stokes passed 25.

The total turned out to be considerably below-par as the Windies responded with 427 and 322 for five in their two innings.

Speaking after West Indies sealed their first Test win in England since 2000, Root told Sky Sports: ‘They put us under pressure when we batted and then went past us when they got their opportunity to bat.

‘If we’re being brutally honest that’s where we could have been a lot better [in the first innings].

‘I’m really pleased with the character and fight we showed to get back into a strong position last night but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.’

Root’s decision to bat first came somewhat as a surprise as just a week earlier England had taken 19 wickets in a single day to beat the Windies inside three days at Edgbaston.

Reflecting on his decision at the toss, Root added: ‘Obviously it’s nice to be able to look back in hindsight and think about how things could have gone differently.
