Persistent rain forces officials to call off final ODI

June 15, 2017

The final match of the three-match One-Day International series between West Indies and Afghanistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Wednesday (June 14). The two teams shared the series 1-1 but both will be disappointed with the way things panned out in the final clash of the tour.
Afghanistan had a golden opportunity to seal an ODI series win on their maiden tour to West Indies. The hosts, on the other hand, needed to play to bag crucial ranking points keeping the 2019 World Cup in mind. West Indies have 77 ranking points and are behind Sri Lanka (93) and Pakistan (93) in the ninth position. The Top 8 teams directly qualify for the mega event in 2019 while the other teams play a qualifying tournament in Bangladesh in 2018.
The toss was delayed after overnight rain and some showers left the outfield at the Darren Sammy International Cricket Stadium in St Lucia soaked. When the toss did happen and the game was reduced to a 43-over-per-side contest, rain returned immediately after to add to the frustration.
The match was finally called off at 19:10 local time, an hour before the cut off time, after the officials concluded no play was possible because of persistent rain.
West Indies will now be eyeing a win against India in the five-match ODI series starting from June 23.
