Thomas still hopeful

September 15, 2015

Former West Indies wicketkeeper Devon Thomas is still interested in being one of 10 players contracted by the Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA).

Denying he had informed the board he was opting out of his contract, Thomas is, however, aware his only option is one that would see him being paid per match, a scenario he will gladly accept.

“I was the captain and why would I want to give up that job? I spoke to the coach (Reginald Benjamin) and I spoke to the president (Auckland Hector), but I am just hoping that I can be a part of the Leeward Islands. I can’t be one of the contracted players because they have 15 players at this time, so I am just waiting until the 6th of November which is the first game.

“I am just playing some tapped ball in the meantime, trying to keep fit still because I have a good form from since the last few games with the Leeward Islands and the CPL, ” he said.

Reports earlier this year, had suggested that Thomas informed LICA he did not wish to continue as one of 10 contracted players, ahead of the Professional Cricket League (PCL).

The player, instead, entered the draft but was not selected by any of the teams in the region.

Thomas, who last played for the West Indies back in 2013 against Australia, said the decision to enter the draft came at the last minute after he realized he was not one of the players protected by the LICA franchise and talks with coach, Reginald Benjamin, yielded no results.
