The West Indies middle and lower order batsmen put up a determined fight to keep their hopes alive on the third day before heavy rain forced play to be abandoned, on Tuesday.

The visitors started the day in deep trouble at 113-6 but rallied to avoid the follow on before persistent rain forced the umpires to call on the covers. They will resume on Wednesday at 224-9 with keeper Joshua Da Silva and last man Shannon Gabriel at the crease.

The day started with left-hander Kyle Mayers and Jason Holder at the wicket and they added 50 more runs to take their partnership to 63 before Mayers was caught by Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne at cover off spinner Dhanajaya De Silva for 45. Mayers faced 62 balls and hit eight fours. Holder scored 36 with two sixes and three boundaries but fell was caught by Dushmantha Chameera at point off left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama, leaving the tourists at 175-8.

Rahkeem Cornwall then adopted the aggressive approach with some cracking shots, as West Indies headed to lunch at 215-8 adding 102 runs in the session. Cornwall played a crucial role with 39 off 58 balls with five fours and a six, as he joined Da Silva in a partnership of 49 for the ninth wicket. Da Silva was solid in defence and closed on 11 not out off 70 balls.

Due to the time lost, play will resume on the fourth day at 9:45am local time (12:15am Wednesday Eastern Caribbean/11:15 pm Tuesday Jamaica Time)
