Windies A success a boost for first-class campaign

November 4, 2016

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jason Mohammed says finding great form while leading West Indies A to an emphatic 3-0 whitewash of a strong Sri Lanka A has been a boost to his confidence ahead of next week’s start of the regional four-day season.

The 30-year-old played a pivotal role as the Caribbean side produced a series of commanding performances to trounce the Sri Lankans in the unofficial One-Day International series.

In the final game in Colombo last Sunday, Mohammed smashed a hundred to help Windies A carve out an eight-run win under the Duckworth/Lewis method.

“It will definitely help a lot. The conditions in Sri Lanka are little bit better to bat in than at home, but what is most important is that I think it will give us a lot of confidence as players, and for myself going back home and knowing I am in good form,” he said.

“Especially scoring this hundred, it’s a confidence booster and it’s an important series for me in terms of me playing for my country, so hopefully I can go there (first-class season) and do well again.”

He added: “I got a half-century in the first [one day] match [in Sri Lanka] and not much of an opportunity in the second, and I said to myself that I had an opportunity to sign off the series on a strong note and get a big half-century or century if I had time, and that is what exactly happened.”

Mohammed had a disappointing last season, finishing with just 125 runs from six games, as Red Force finished fourth in the standings behind repeat champions Guyana Jaguars.

However, the right-hander said he had his eyes set on leading the Red Force batting this time around, something he had done in previous seasons.

“I’ll be looking to score the most runs for Red Force. I’ve done it, not this past season, but a couple of seasons in succession — two for three seasons in a row,” he pointed out.

Red Force’s first three games of the season will all be at home at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. They open against Windward Islands Volcanoes in a day/night encounter on November 11 before hosting nemeses Barbados Pride in the second round and Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the third round.
