Super50 Day18: Barbados Pride Secure A Place In The Semis

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Purposeful bowling, led by Miguel Cummins, and sound batting, anchored by Kjorn Ottley, swept Barbados Pride to a seven-wicket win over Canada on Saturday, to seal their place in the semi-finals of the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup.

Entering the game needing a win to end all doubts about their place in the Final Four in Trinidad, the Pride outclassed the Canadians to clinch their sixth victory in Group A to move to an unassailable 24 points.

Cummins was the pick of the Pride bowlers, grabbing 3-19 from his allotted 10 overs, as the Canadians were bowled out for 154 in 43.5 overs at the Conaree Cricket Centre adjacent to the Robert Bradshaw International Airport.

Ottley then cracked an even 50 from 38 balls – his second half-century of the group stage – to lay the foundation for a successful run chase for the Pride which they completed in the 23rd over.

The result meant that not even a win for either hosts Leeward Islands Hurricanes or Jamaica Scorpions, one of last year’s beaten semi-finalists, in the penultimate group match, starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Conaree, can knock the Pride out of pole position.

Cummins struck in his first, third and fourth overs to remove Jeet Mehta, Harsh Thaker and Nitish Kumar, as Canada stumbled to 24 for four, after deciding to bat.

Left-hander Kanwar Mann hit the top score of 44 and shared a stand of 52 for the fifth wicket with his captain Kanwarpal Tathgur to add substance to the total.

Stand-in captain Ashley Nurse, bowling his off-spin, removed Tathgur and Shreyas Movva in the space of four balls inside the 22nd over to put the skids on the Canadians again.

Shahid Ahmadzai, not out on 39, shared a couple of small partnerships towards the backend of the innings to get Canada past the 150-mark.

Another half-century opening stand between Ottley and Leniko Boucher gave the Pride a bright start to their chase.

Off-spinner Nitish Kumar took two wickets to add a bit of intrigue, but newcomer Zachary McCaskie was not out on 38, Jonathan Carter scored 32 and Boucher made 22 to ensure the Pride got over the finish line safely.

The Pride will meet the runner-up in Group B in the first semi-final, starting at 1:30 p.m. this coming Thursday at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
