West Indies tour of Netherlands
3rd and final One-Day International
Venue: VRA Cricket Club, Amstelveen
Result: West Indies won by 20 runs
Series: West Indies won 3-0
Player-of-the-Match: Kyle Mayers
West Indies ended the tour in grand style with a third comprehensive victory to make a clean sweep. Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks scored maiden ODI hundreds and then the bowlers were able to combat a counter-attack from the home team’s batters in the closet contest on Saturday.
In his first match at the top of the order, the left-hander Mayers smashed 120 off 106 balls, a knock that included eight fours and seven sixes and piloted the visitors to 308-5.
Brooks, who batted down at Number 3 for this match, produced a classy unbeaten 101 off 115 balls, with three fours and four sixes in an innings which proved the perfect foil for Mayer’s fireworks. Together, they added 184 for the second wicket
The Netherlands made a great response with openers Max O’Dowd (89) and Vikramjit Singh (54) striking half-centuries and Musa Ahmed belting a run-a-ball 42, to hand West Indies a scare before the run chase buckled for 288 in the last over.
Fast bowler Shermon Lewis, on ODI debut, snatched 3-67 from 9.5 overs while left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein and (2-52) and leg-spinner Hayden Walsh (2-54) finished with two wickets apiece.
Mayers was named the Player of the Match. Speaking afterwards he said:
“It was a good batting track. I always back myself to score runs if I have the time to bat. Luckily, I was given that opportunity today and it paid off for the team.”
The Dutch opening stand of 98 ended in the 18th over when Kyle Mayers finally got the breakthrough. Musa Ahmed and Bas de Leede tried to keep up the scoring rate thereafter, but the runs proved to be too much in the end.
Following the result West Indies claimed 30 crucial points in the ICC ODI Super League, which contribute to qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup in India next year. The West Indies will now move on to Pakistan, where they will compete in a three-match ODI series at the Multan Cricket Stadium on June 8, 10 and 12.
