Hayley Matthews fell just one run short of a century while Shanika Bruce snatched four wickets which led Barbados to a big win over Windward Islands on the first match of the CG United Women’s Suer50 Cup on Thursday. Matthews demonstrated her immense class form the start of her innings and hit eight boundaries off 133 balls. With the landmark in sight she fell trapped in front to seamer Pearl Etienne she fell for 99 – with the score at 192-2 at the start of the 44thover. Matthews added a record 177 for the first wicket with left-hander Kycia Knight, who made 72 off 108 balls before she fell caught at short mid-wicket off Jannillea Glasgow.
Kyshona Knight then struck three quick boundaries on her way to 27 not out off 35 balls, not out with her at the end of the Barbados innings was teenager Alisa Scantlebury on 10 not out as Barbados amassed 227-2 from their 50 overs.
The Windwards batting innings never got going as they plummeted to 9-6 in the eighth over7.5 overs. Shamilia Connell and Bruce tore into their top and middle order. Then came a 32-run partnership between Japhina Joseph and Glasgow before Glasgow fell for 11, Joseph departed not long after for a top-score of 18. Etienne delivered with the bat as the last batter, hitting a quick 16 before she was caught off Aaliyah Williams. Windward Islands were all out for 78 in 23.1 overs. Bruce finished with figures of 9-2-48-4 and Connell 5-2-9-3.
Matthews spoke to CWI Media after the match. “As a team we are really happy with the performance. Batting first we were happy to put over 200 on the board and then to be able to restrict them for under 80, I’m pretty pleased with that and it should have our net run rate looking pretty healthy after this game. Being patient, all innings long adding up (to) that hundred … I’m pretty disappointed not to get there at the end but just happy I could’ve contributed 99 runs to the team score and help us get a big total on the board,” she said.
