Jaguars crush Scorpions

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Three-time reigning champions, Guyana Jaguars, started their quest for a fourth straight title in style by crushing Jamaica Scorpions by 263 runs, on the final day of their opening round clash in the Regional four-day championship here Sunday.

Resuming the day on 61 for two in their second innings in pursuit of an improbable 483 for victory at the Guyana National Stadium, Scorpions were dismissed in the final session for 219.

Wicketkeeper Romaine Morrison top-scored with 68, left-hander Assad Fudadin got 40 while Brandon King chipped in with 35 and Dennis Bulli, 32.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul picked up four for 55 to end with match figures of 10 for 84 while seamer Keemo Paul supported with two for 25.

For the victory, Jaguars gathered 18.4 points while Scorpions claimed 4.2.

Scorpions started the day well with Brandon King and Assad Fudadin extending their third wicket stand to 73 before being separated.

King, unbeaten on 22 at the start, was first to fall with the score on 98 and when captain Paul Palmer was run out for one 11 balls later with a single run added, Scorpions were stuttering badly.

The left-handed Fudadin, who started the day on 11, looked to be making a fight of it when he reached 40 off 132 deliveries with four fours and a six but his demise, and that of Fabian Allen for nine 15 balls later, left the visitors in dire straits on 115 for six.

Morrison then found an ally in Bulli and together they provided a rearguard effort for Scorpions, posting 85 for the seventh wicket.

While Morrison faced 107 balls and lashed nine fours and two sixes, Bulli hammered five fours in a 110-ball innings.

Once they were separated, however, the last four wickets tumbled for a mere 19 runs.
