WIPA is very concerned with the self development and future stability and security of players. Securing lucrative contracts would be a meaningless exercise if this was not accompanied by the inculcation in the players of the importance of sound business and financial management, and much self-discipline. Given the cricketing life-span of cricketers as being of relatively short duration, WIPA considers it of crucial significance to prepare them for ‘a life after cricket’. To this end, arrangements have been made in the following areas:

Human Development

A cadre of professionals in human psychology and development lead seminars in which players participate. The notions of self-esteem, self-awareness, personal and social history, mental attitude and perspective, purpose, passion and commitment are discussed. Issues of consistency, performance and teamness area also addressed. It is further emphasized to them that the challenge for them is to look at their lives not just as cricketers but as people with a gift around which there is a responsibility to others, their families, countries team, Board, the region and its people, and the game of cricket itself.

Protocol Matters

As part of the players’ development and in keeping with their ‘ambassadorial’ role, it is incumbent upon players to understand the importance and niceties of this function. There are certain internationally-accepted protocol standards which must be adhered to whether you represent a developed or developing country. Ignoring these standards can result in embarrassment and disruption in good relations between teams and countries. WIPA pays much attention to this subject in its briefing to players.

Money Management

Much emphasis is being placed in ensuring that players become more closely aware of managing relatively large amounts of money to which hitherto they were not exposed. Financial experts have been sourced to advise them on money management, including planning, savings, investment, and financial and social security. At its seminars, WIPA underscores the need for every member of the team to be aware of local custom in the area in which they are playing and the internationally accepted norms of courtesy and good manners.

Counseling

Cricketers more than any other sportsmen face tremendous challenges of being away on tours and away from their families for several months. The accompanying stress in such scenario for young and married players can cause much disruption to families and family life. There is a pool of counselors whose services are employed by WIPA in these and other circumstances.

Legal Matters

WIPA has recourse to a battery of lawyers to deal with situations with players that require legal interpretation and advice.

Employment/Housing

The interest shown by a number of players to secure employment and housing is, indeed, refreshing to us in WIPA. It shows that they are giving serious consideration to the mantra WIPA has been preaching to them to prepare themselves for ‘a life after cricket’. Recommendations have been given as well as direct contact with relevant authorities made by WIPA in pursuit of these requests.
