The West Indies let themselves down on day one of the final Test at Perth and Australia duly took control. The hosts posted 339 for 3 – the fourth highest first day score at the WACA.
Simon Katich – for the second time in his career – fell heartbreakingly short of a century when he was caught at square leg on 99. It was also the second time he was dismissed in the 90s in this series – a series during which no Australian has yet reached triple figures.
Michael Hussey – not out on 81 – may well change that on day two as he and another Western Australia man – Marcus North on 23 – took Australia to the close. The other significant contribution with the bat came from Katich’s opening partner, Shane Watson, whose 89 followed up his 96 in the Adelaide draw. Two more scores which barely missed the three figure mark. If it is a curse, Hussey – a man who needs big runs if only to keep over-reacting critics quiet – will want to break it. |

Active Australian captains in general, but Ricky Ponting in particular, are not the type of men who busy themselves heaping praise on opposition players. Under Ponting’s captaincy, that time honoured Australian cricket tradition of publicly targeting opposition batsmen has not waned.
The latest instalment was Mitchell Johnson’s pre-series boast that his side believed Shivnarine Chanderpaul to be susceptible to the short ball so they intended to test their theory during the three Tests.
And so when Ponting – upon completion of the Second Test – had more than half a sentence of incoherent mumbling kudos for Kemar Roach, it was enough to cause one to sit up and take more than passing notice. |

Congratulations are in order for the Trinidad and Tobago team who have produced some really splendid performances in India. There is no doubt their success is attributable in part to the unstinting support they received from the cricket authorities, media and fans from back home. In my observations in the October edition of this paper, I noted the shoddy treatment of West Indies players by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), the attitude of some commentators to the players, and the possible impact on West Indies cricket. I want here to provide some examples, limiting my comments to only the most talented of the cricketers, and the most egregious circumstances, and to urge that the Board do much better in the future. In 1973-74, the WICB waged war with the world’s greatest cricketer, Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, requiring him to prove his physical fitness, as if the great man would conceal injuries so that he could be selected to play for his country. |

The Directors and Executive of the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) have, at a recent meeting, welcomed the appointment of Mr. Michael “Larry” Romany as its Chief Operations Officer (COO). Mr. Romany is the current Honorary President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Professional Football League.
Mr. Romany has had a distinguished career in sport both as a coach and administrator. He brings to WIPA a wealth of experience and a broad insight and understanding of issues and complexities inherent in today’s constantly-changing sporting environment.
WIPA’s President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dinanath Ramnarine expressed immense satisfaction at having Romany as a member of the organization’s secretariat because, in the former’s view, “there are few people that have the passion and drive for, and knowledge of, administration of sport as Larry”. |

It was not to be. Try though Dwayne Bravo and the West Indies did, they could not get the five more wickets needed to complete what would have been an astonishing come-from-behind victory at the Adelaide Oval in the Second Test. It was Michael Clarke, with an unbeaten 61, who provided greatest resistance and ensured that Australia remained 1-0 ahead in the three match series.
They resumed at the start of the final day on 284 for 8 and were dismissed for 317 with Chris Gayle becoming the only West Indian captain to carry his bat through a Test innings ending on 165 not out. |

Chris Gayle batted for the entire fourth day to set up what is sure to be an enthralling final day at the Adelaide Oval with all three outcomes still very possible and an outright result to the Second Test still highly probable.
James Sutherland – the Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Australia – may well be sending Gayle a ‘thank you’ note for his magnificent innings of 155 not out which will surely add a few more coins in CA’s coffers through last day ticket sales. Having curbed his natural instincts for all out attack, Gayle played the innings of a leader that would make even the legendary Clive Lloyd proud. The day belonged to him, he dominated the proceedings not with his usual belligerent bludgeoning but with a Chanderpaulesque single-mindedness. Everything else on the day was relegated into the footnotes. |
