Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he is focused on repositioning the country as a Test venue by the year 2015, as part of his new Cabinet's overall development plan for the Nature Isle.
Stressing that it was time to take Dominica to the "next level", Skerrit emphasised his desire to see the country transformed into a major player on the Caribbean cricket landscape.
"We are meeting this evening in the Windsor Park Stadium, a sporting and cultural facility that is second to none in the English-speaking Caribbean. Cricket is our passion here in Dominica as it is elsewhere in the region," Skerrit said on Monday at a ceremony that saw him and his ministers take the oath of office. |

Marquee West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been ruled out of Guyana's opening match of the West Indies Cricket Board four-day competition through injury.
The 35-year-old left-hander has not fully recovered from a finger injury he sustained on the recent tour of Australia and will sit out the second-round match against Trinidad & Tobago in Antigua next week. Guyana have drawn a bye for the first round in Jamaica.
Chanderpaul, the second-highest West Indies run-scorer in Tests with 8,669 runs, has been replaced by Vishal Singh.
Chanderpaul's recovery time was expected to be four weeks but he informed selectors that the treatment on the injury was inadequate and, as a result, the ligament had not fully healed. |

Wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich showed good form in the West Indies Under-19s warm-up match in New Zealand against Northern Districts on Tuesday night, to give the West Indies a morale boosting victory over a team with six regular First Class players. After the West Indies bowled out Northern Districts ‘A’ for just 123, Dowrich slammed an unbeaten 71, as the West Indies set a revised target of 215 off 50 overs, got home by two wickets at 220 for eight in 47.4 overs.
Dowrich looked at ease while at the crease and this is good news for the West Indies team as they head into the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup next week. He received good support from Trinidadian Evin Lewis who scored 36 and skipper Andre Creary who got a hard hitting 38. Earlier, Nevis fast bowler Nelson Bolan was at the top of his game in claiming 4/30 and left arm spinner Jomel Warrican chipped in with 2/26, as the hosts choosing the bat first, were skittled before a good crowd at Bay Oval. |

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have agreed to an umpires’ exchange programme for 2010 which will see more international exposure for match officials from the Caribbean and the United Kingdom.
The International Umpires’ Exchange Programme is designed to allow umpires from full member countries to get the opportunity to stand in first-class and top-level tournaments away from home. This is the second year for the International Umpires Exchange Programme between the ECB and the WICB.
English first-class umpire Robert Bailey will officiate in three rounds of the WICB’s four-day first-class competition in January. In exchange, an umpire from the West Indies is expected to travel to England in the summer of 2010 to officiate in the English County season. The WICB’s appointment for 2010 will be made at a later date. During the 2009 WICB and the ECB had a similar programme with Richard Kettleborough from England officiating in the WICB four-day season, while Peter Nero from T&T officiated in the English County season. |

Former West Indies Test cricketers yesterday reacted with shock at the omission of batting legend Brian Lara from the top Tests and One-day International (ODI) teams of the decade as selected by Cricinfo, the top international cricket Web site.
Five Australians were selected to each team, according to the panel which included the Web site’s editors Sambit Bal and Andrew Miller as well as former Australian captain Ian Chappell and Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar. Three, along with Sachin Tendulkar, Muttiah Muralitharan and the South African all-round pair of Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock, were named in both teams but there was no room for Lara, the region’s most successful batsman who broke the record for the highest Test score during the decade and also held the record for the most Test runs by an individual batsman.
Former West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts said he was amused by Lara’s exclusion. |

As the West Indies Cricket Board stumbles from one predicament to another, former team captain Carl Hooper feels the time has long come for Clive Lloyd to play a more prominent role in the administration of the Regional game. According to Hooper, Lloyd who presided over the transformation of the team as captain from an ordinary side to best in the world for 15 years, is ideally equipped to be president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) “He would not want anything from it, he does everything out of love for the game”, declared Hooper adding that Lloyd has the “world’ of contacts to get things done. Lloyd is currently a member of a bloated WICB Board of Directors that amounts to 14 territorial representatives, excluding the president and vice president. |
