Early setbacks for Windies in chase of 444

Ross Taylor’s century – a New Zealand joint record 17th – helped set Windies a target of 444 before its pacemen picked up two quick wickets to push the visiting team against the wall on the third day of the second Test in Hamilton on Monday (December 11).

New Zealand, ahead by 152 runs after the first-innings exchanges, called off its second innings at 291 for 8 to leave Windies with a monumental chase. In the eight overs left in the day at Seddon Park, Trent Boult and Tim Southee struck once apiece as Windies slid to 30 for 2, with Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope in the middle on 13 and one respectively.

Taylor was the anchor for New Zealand as it started the second innings after finishing off the Windies first innings on 221 early in the morning. Taylor, in at No. 4 after Jeet Raval and Tom Latham had fallen to leave the scoreboard reading 42 for 2, put together 58 runs with Kane Williamson, the captain, who scored 54 in 64 balls with eight fours.

Taylor carried on to score 107 not out, a chancy innings that lasted 198 balls and included 11 boundaries. One top edge early on off Miguel Cummins eluded Shane Dowrich’s reach behind the stumps, while Hope dropped him at gully off Shannon Gabriel when he was on 35.

He did get to the milestone eventually, though, joining Martin Crowe and Williamson as the most prolific century-makers from New Zealand when he drove Raymon Reifer for four.

Southee smacked four fours in a typically belligerent 20-ball 22 not out before New Zealand declared. For Windies, Cummins, who bowled quick and made the ball jag around, returned 3 for 69, while Gabriel and Roston Chase had two wickets apiece.

There was still enough time after that for Boult, who returned 4 for 73 in the first innings, to send Kieran Powell caught at third slip by Southee for a duck and for Southee to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer caught at mid-off for 15.
