Coach Development boost for cricket in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has continued its programme to enhance the coaching standards across the region, with the recent completion of another a high-quality coaching course. Following the recent courses in Barbados; CWI in conjunction with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and the University of the West Indies (UWI); delivered two days of coaching courses to upskill, assess and accredit local coaches and coach developers at the CWI Competition Coaching (Level 1) stage of the West Indies Cricket Pathway.

A total of 46 participants took part in the face-to-face component of the course which was held on April 6 and 7 at La Bonne Intention Cricket Ground. Additionally, as apart of CWI’s development and investment strategy to upgrade and upskill coaches across the region, further courses will be held for coaches on the neighboring islands of St Kitts and Nevis over the upcoming Easter weekend.

“It was a fantastic effort by the GCB in conjunction with the various counties to promote the opportunity and for so many coaches to take part. It is great to see such an emphasis on Coach Development locally and the youngsters across Guyana will no doubt reap the benefits of having increased access to quality, contemporary coaches in the community,” CWI Coach Development Manager, Chris Brabazon said. “The Local Coach Developers, Colin Stuart and Julian Moore did a great job in facilitating the course alongside Brendon Ramlal and UWI Representatives, Keshava Ramphal and Ryerson Bhagoo.”

The coaches also participated in an introductory online module delivered on March 21 which explored the West Indies Cricket Pathway, role of the coaches within it, coaching principles, and coaching styles.

In its promise to lift coaching standards, over the past three years CWI has delivered close to 600 new coaching certificates across eight Caribbean countries, while 16 CWI Coach Developers have also been trained to deliver Level 1 Courses locally.
