Gayle, Ganga and Ramnarine Extend Condolences to Giselle’s Family
Tuesday, 06 January 2009

WIPA has joined the rest of the sporting fraternity in expressing condolences on the tragic passing of Giselle Jonette Salandy. The following messages were received from the President & CEO of WIPA, Mr. Dinanath Ramnarine, the Captain of the West Indies Cricket Team, Mr. Chris Gayle, and the Captain of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Team, Mr. Daren Ganga.

“On behalf of the Members and Executive of WIPA, I extend our deep-felt condolences to the family of the late Giselle Salandy as well as to the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board on her sudden and tragic passing away. The news of the death of this young, talented, world boxing champion from Trinidad and Tobago has filled us with much sadness, coming as it does just when she was at the pinnacle of her career. We are, however, comforted by the fact that she has left a rich legacy worthy of emulation by all sportsmen and sportswomen”. (President & CEO of WIPA)

“Members of the West Indies cricket team currently on tour of New Zealand have learned with much sadness of the unfortunate circumstances in which Trinidad and Tobago’s national boxing hero, Jizelle, met her death. As fellow West Indians we mourn her passing and express our sincerest condolences to her family and those in the boxing fraternity in the twin-island state”. (Captain of the West Indies Team).

“My teammates and I are deeply shocked at the sudden passing away of one of our sporting colleagues, Giselle, who has brought international fame and glory to all citizens of our beloved country. We ourselves have been highly-motivated by her commitment, discipline and exemplary conduct during her short but brilliant career. Her passing away would not be in vain if sportsmen and other citizens alike emulate the noble standards she set. May God Bless her”. (Captain of T&T Team).

West Indies Take Time Out For Children
Monday, 05 January 2009

Members of the West Indies team took a break from their busy schedule to spend time with a number of enthusiastic young cricketers.

Over 200 persons, most of them from the Onslow Cricket Club’s Under-13 programme, turned up on Monday at the Nanville Grounds, on the outskirts of the Wellington city centre to get close to captain Chris Gayle and other team-mates.

The event was organized by representatives of Digicel, the official team sponsors. During the morning, Gayle gave the youngsters words of advice and urged them to “dream big dreams” and go after their goals.

“When I look into the crowd I can see many young children and I’m happy to be here with you. I was a little boy like you back in Jamaica, and I had dreams like you. Now I am here today and once you go after your goals, one day you will achieve them,” Gayle told the gathering.

“I see a lot of parents here and this is very good. I want urge you little ones to listen to your parents. They know what’s best for you will guide you in the right direction.”

After speaking to the group, the Windies players signed autographs, posed for photographs and handed out gifts as part of a quiz. Members of the Onslow Club also presented the players and members of the team’s management with souvenir caps.

Jamaica Squad for Regional Series
Monday, 05 January 2009

Jason Dawes and Horace Miller; who represented West Indies at the ICC Youth (U-19) World Cup in Bangladesh early this year, are in Jamaica's 14-man squad to start the West Indies first class season. Fast bowler Dawes and batsman Miller, both 19 years old, are the only uncapped first-class players in the squad announced by the selectors, but Miller did represent Jamaica in the Regional one-day championship in Guyana last year.

Title holders Jamaica will start their campaign on January 9th against the Leeward Islands.

The squad, which does not include Jamaica's West Indies players now on tour of New Zealand, also sees the return of Wavell Hinds after the 32-year old left handed batsman aborted his 2008 season to play for English county Derbyshire. Hinds is one of four players in the squad with West Indies senior team experience. The others are batsmen Brenton Parchment and Donovan Pagon and the all-rounder David Bernard. Tamar Lambert a highly regarded team leader, is favoured to be skipper, but the Jamaica Cricket Board (JCB) is yet to confirm a captain.

Jamaica: Donovan Pagon, Brenton Parchment, Wavell Hinds, Danza Hyatt, Horace Miller, Tamar Lambert, David Bernard, Keith Hibbert, Lorenzo Ingram, Odean Brown, Gavin Wallace, Andre Russel, Jason Dawes, Andrew Richardson
