Aguilleira leads T&T title defence

An experienced T&T bunch, led by captain Merissa Aguilleira, will head out to St Vincent and the Grenadines to defend its titles at the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Senior Women’s Tournament carded from April 16-May 1.

The senior women’s team under the stewardship of Gerald Garcia, emerged champions in both the regional 50-Over and Twenty20 (T20) tournaments last year and with the same supporting cast of manager Marjorie Thomas and trainer Wayne Samuel, is expected to do the same.

The T&T Women’s Cricket Association (TTWCA) announced the unit yesterday and joining Aquilleira are fellow West Indies women teammates spinner Anisa Mohammed and allrounders Stacy Ann King and Britney Cooper, who were all members of the regional team that won the ICC Women’s T20 Cup, last year in India.

Mohammed, who will serve as her vice captain, had starred for T&T in a hard-fought battle against Jamaica to win the Regional Women T20 final.

She returned figures of 2/15 and scored 21 runs in the low scoring affair to lead her team to a two-wicket victory with two balls to spare in a thriller.

Aguilleira was also recognised for her performance in the competition as she and Jamaica’s Tameka Sanford were the wicketkeepers with the most dismissals (5).

Returning to boost the national senior team are Karishma Ramharack, who was selected as a reserve on the WI T20 champion squad, youngster Reneice Boyce, bowlers Felicia Walters and Kamara Ragoobar, allrounders Leeann Kirby, Kirbyina Alexander and Shenelle Lord and batsman Rachael Vincent. Twenty-year-old Boyce was skipper of the local Under-19 team that won the T20 Championsips held in T&T, last year. In that tournament, she won the award for most wicket keeping dismissals while her teammate Ragoobar got the prize for most wickets. Boyce was also one of three players, who were part of last year’s WICB Emerging Player Camp. The others were Walters and Kirby.

The newcomers are batsman Caneisha Isaac and bowler Shanice Pascall, who both are part of the Hibiscus Ladies outfit, that is currently competing in the TTWCA 50-over League.
